At its January 2026 meeting, the Northern Berks Regional Police Commission addressed how animal calls are handled in Maidencreek Township, Ontelaunee Township, and Leesport Borough.
Residents routinely call the police when they find a stray or abandoned dog. The Commission’s position, announced January 13, 2026, is that Northern Berks Regional Police officers will no longer be able to respond to calls about abandoned or stray dogs, because the department has no resources to take custody of them.
If you find a stray or lost animal, do not wait for a police response. The Resources page on this website lists the stray and lost animal contacts for each municipality we serve, including the Animal Rescue League for Leesport Borough (stray cats only), and the dog licensing and Dog Law information for Berks County.
For an animal that is injured, aggressive, or creating a danger, call the Berks County Communication Center at (610) 655-4911. For emergencies, call 911.
